How can a joke be funny?

Have you ever wondered why we think something is funny? When we watch something that, even without understanding the context of it, we find it funny? This happens a lot when we watch something that originally comes from another context, another culture. And to answer this, we first have to think about where our ability to find something funny comes from.

For a joke to be funny, there are several factors that make it happen, such as: atmosphere (context/reference), identification with a situation, element of surprise, relief from not being in a bad situation and stereotypical behavior.

The context is very important so that we can find something funny and therefore laugh at it. In other words, when we understand the references of a joke, it becomes much funnier.

The most important thing for a joke to be funny is the context.

But, we can laugh at something without knowing the context of it, and that's what happens most when we watch something from another culture/country. A great example of this is the series “Everybody Hates Chris”, which is very popular in Brazil.

Although most viewers do not understand the jokes and references made in the series, as it is about another culture and other experiences, this does not make the series any less funny. And why does this happen? Because the series doesn’t just use the “context” element to be funny.

In the episodes of “Everybody Hates Chris” there is also the use of identification, relief and stereotypical behavior. In the case of Brazil, the character Rochelle is a perfect example that refers to both identification and stereotypical behavior.

Many Brazilians have a mother like Rochelle, which generates public identification with the character, as it refers to their own experiences, with humor being a response to this identification.

The character's exaggerated and stereotypical behavior breaks the tension of what we are seeing, which means that, regardless of how serious the situation portrayed is, we won't take it seriously.

Relief is the element that is most present in the series. We feel relief in not being in the protagonist's shoes, just as the catchphrase of the character Drew Rock, Chris's brother, says: “I'm glad I'm not you”.

By bringing all these elements together we have the perfect recipe for a good comedy. But this doesn't always work, because although the series is a success in Brazil, the same thing doesn't happen in its country of origin. And why does that happen? Due to the excess of exaggerated behavior and stereotyping!

Currently, the American public no longer likes comedies that feature stereotypical behavior and very exaggerated situations. But if Brazilians like the series “Everybody Hates Chris" and films such as “White Chicks” precisely because of these elements, what changes then? Because this is not our reality.

So, for a joke to be funny, several factors are taken into account, making it something much more complex than we can imagine. That's why not everyone is considered funny and different people might not find the same things funny.
